5 Things To Remember When Clearing Out

Five Things To Remember When Clearing Out For A House Move

There’s no doubt about it, moving house is the most stressful thing you’ll ever do. Packing box after box, and then unloading box after box and telling each other time and time again that there doesn’t seem to be any end to it.

While we can’t help with the actual move into your new property, we know a thing or twelve about clearing out spaces! So, in the blog, we’ll give you five things most people overlook when decluttering ahead of a house move.

Be Ruthless

Before you even begin your clear-out, you need to be in the right mindset. You need to be completely ruthless when sorting through your personal belongings.

Keep one Christmas card from your granny, as opposed to 30. You did homemade pasta once, don't lug around a pasta-maker hoping you get another notion one day.

It may not feel like it, but once you start looking, you will come away with black bags brimming with stuff that you no longer use but could be very helpful for your local charity shop.

Don’t go overboard though. Maybe there’s something old lying around that you could upcycle into your very first housewarming present?

Declutter Room By Room

It is always best to start the clear-out weeks before moving, beginning by donating, recycling or dumping anything you don't use or don't look after.

Start in the rooms you use the least and work your way to the heavy hitters.

If you genuinely hate decluttering or don't have time to properly sort it, put an empty box or black bag by the door of every room in the weeks before the move. In no time, you'll have added the items in that room you don't use daily.

One decluttering problem area most people will overlook is 'the random drawer'. You Boxes of mystery wires and cables, batteries, lightbulbs and old phones don’t need to come with you to your new place. Empty these drawers and any storage boxes in your home as soon as possible and sort them into different categories.

Many supermarkets have facilities for dumping used batteries and coin changing machines that will swap your loose change for notes.

Keep Your Cool

Those couples in those mortgage ads look lovely and romantic, but they do not exist anywhere in real life. Drop those idealistic couples into day three of moving house, and no amount of soft acoustic music will make them right.

It's probably best to take any arguments as integral to the house-moving process, rather than any indicator that you're both destined for romantic doom.

Make a pact to resolve tension immediately. Don't let it simmer. Consider ordering a nice takeaway or putting on a favourite film as a reward for when you're finished. Thinking of a tasty curry cheese chip and a breast in a bun in front of Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous will cool off any flare-up straight away.

There’s Always eBay

A handy way to approach your clear-out is to gather everything that you can make some money off. Start by looking for clothes you never wear or no longer fit, any electrical devices gathering dust or that list of unwanted Christmas presents.

Knowing that you can make a little extra cash from your clear-out will make the whole job significantly more worthwhile.

It’s helpful to label three boxes ‘charity’ ‘sell’ and ‘dump’. If you come across something you never use, pick a box for it. eBay, Depop, DoneDeal and even the Facebook Marketplace are all easy ways to earn some cash as well as doing a clear-out.

When you move from one accommodation to another, you’re going to generate a lot of waste. There will be old furniture, old clothes, old mattresses, old bits of kitchen and God only knows what else.
