What is Upcycling?

Upcycling is the process of reusing and reimagining discarded objects or materials to create something of higher quality or value than the original.

Upcycling continues the life of the object, keeps it out of a landfill and adds value.

The 'up' refers to the value and quality added.

Is Upcycling the Same as Recycling?

No! The main difference between the two is the process. Recycling essentially breaks down the material and reforms it into something new. Resources and energy are used throughout the processes. E.g., the recycled plastic bottle is broken down into fibres and turned into a t-shirt.

Upcycling is more energy-efficient and materials are not broken down or degraded - instead, they are repurposed - adding value and quality while extending the lifespan of the equipment. E.g., a wine bottle made into a lamp.

Can Anyone Upcycle?

With just a little imagination and perhaps a coat of paint or some new hardware, an old cabinet, table or chair can get new life as something fresh and unique.

It is the act of taking something no longer in use and giving it a second life and new function. In doing so, the finished product often becomes more practical, valuable and beautiful than what it previously was.

Do I Need DIY Experience to Start Upcycling?

It's not at all necessary, but some DIY experience may be useful. Upcycling should be a fun hobby where you learn as you go. Pick some simple projects to work on first until you're confident enough to tackle more challenging projects. When it comes to upcycling throw out the rule book, have fun and enjoy the process!

Five Upcycling Tips for Beginners

1. Don't bite off more than you chew: Start with a project something you can achieve. Something simple. That old bike converted into a bathroom sink sure looks cool but where do even start with that? Attempting something complicated, you can't finish will only dishearten you.

2. Take a second look: Ask yourself before throwing anything out, "can this be upcycled? You'd be surprised by how much potential is in what some people consider to be junk.

3. Great artists steal: The internet is your friend. There is a tonne of great upcycling ideas online, like turning an old ladder into a bookcase or painting an old sideboard with chalk paint. Give 'upcycling ideas' a Google, trawl through DIY projects on Pinterest or Instagram. We're big fans of the upcycling work of The Revamp Tramp and Vintage Irish Kat on Instagram.

4. Be bold: Forget trying to impress anyone. It's about expressing yourself and creating something unique. Who knows maybe you'll be able to sell your upcycles at a car boot sale or community fair.

5. Stick at it: It's easy to get discouraged and give up. Mistakes are all part of the learning process and are essential to perfecting new skills.
