- Bring your glass bottles and cans to your local Bottle Bank. An obvious one this but you’d be surprised at how many people don’t do it, either for reasons of laziness or simply not knowing whether your nearest Bottle Bank is. All local authority websites will have information as to where your nearest one is. Check it out!
- Don’t buy too much “just in case”. When you’re shopping, try and take consideration for how much food will realistically be eaten. Don’t get sucked in by “two for one” offers if you know that you’ll probably end up dumping the food!
- You don’t always have to get rid of garden waste. Grass clippings and leaves can be piled into a corner where they will degrade naturally. They don’t always have to be gotten rid of there and then.
- Use charity shops and local clothes banks. Don’t ever throw out clothes that you won’t wear anymore. Clothes Banks and to a lesser extent (depending on the quality of the clothes) will always be grateful of your extra clothes. They will be recycled and you’ll save space in the bins and money in your pocket.
- Think before you throw things out. So you’ve gotten a new toaster…are you sure your old one has nothing left to give? Depending on the condition of your possessions, there are usually myriad alternatives to throwing them out. You can sell them online or better yet, donate them to local charities.
- Be mindful of packaging. When you’re shopping, bear in mind that you’ll be the one disposing of the packaging so try and buy products with as little packaging as possible.
